Immersion pulmonary edema
Past History
Current soldier (marine)

A form of pulmonary edema
Occur in divers, swimmers, snorkelers
Pathophysiology: unknown
Fluid shifting from peripheral to central circulatory system
Peripheral vasoconstriction
Tight swimwear
Symptom: cough, dyspnea, wheezing, pink sputum
DDx
Other cause of pulmonary edema
Near-drowning
Pulmonary decompression sickness
Stress-induced cardiomyopathy, etc.
Image finding
Similar to hydrostatic pulmonary edema
Radiograph: Normal to diffuse increased opacity
CT: Diffuse ill-defined GGO
Mild interlobular septal thickening
Treatment
Conservative : keep warm, upright position, O2 inhalation
Prognosis
Complete resolution within 1-2 days
Unconsciousness and death (rare)
